What this study means for families
This review discusses aripiprazole, a medication approved by the FDA for treating irritability in autistic children and teens. The authors note that aripiprazole can help with various symptoms while having fewer side effects than some other medications - it typically doesn't cause significant weight gain or movement problems. The medication is included in official treatment guidelines for autism and is commonly prescribed because it addresses multiple symptom areas while being generally well-tolerated by young people.

Research summary
This review examines aripiprazole's use in treating psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents, with specific focus on autism-related irritability. The authors highlight aripiprazole's broad therapeutic profile, addressing productive, negative, affective, and cognitive symptoms while maintaining favorable tolerability. The medication has received FDA approval for treating schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism-associated irritability in pediatric populations, based on open-label clinical trials. The review emphasizes aripiprazole's advantages including minimal extrapyramidal symptoms, neutral effects on weight and metabolic parameters, and positive impacts on cognitive functioning.
The drug is noted to be included in national clinical guidelines for autism treatment and is frequently prescribed due to its comprehensive symptom management and safety profile.

Key findings
- 1
Aripiprazole has FDA approval for treating irritability associated with autistic disorder in children and adolescents
Confidence: strongRelevance: Provides regulatory validation for clinical use in autism-related behavioral symptoms - 2
The medication demonstrates favorable tolerability with low extrapyramidal symptoms and neutral effects on weight and metabolic parameters
Confidence: moderateRelevance: Important safety considerations for long-term pediatric use, particularly relevant for families concerned about medication side effects - 3
Aripiprazole addresses multiple symptom domains including productive, negative, affective, and cognitive symptoms
Confidence: moderateRelevance: Suggests comprehensive therapeutic benefits beyond just behavioral management in autism

Clinical implications
Aripiprazole represents an established treatment option for autism-related irritability with regulatory approval. Its favorable side effect profile makes it suitable for long-term pediatric use. However, clinical decisions should consider individual patient factors and be made in consultation with qualified medical professionals experienced in autism treatment.

Limitations
This is a narrative review rather than systematic analysis. No specific sample sizes, effect sizes, or detailed methodology from cited trials are provided. The review relies on open-label studies rather than randomized controlled trials, and specific outcome measures are not described.

Original abstract
For child psychiatry, the priority task is not only the relief of psychopathological symptoms, but also the preservation and restoration of cognitive functioning. Drugs that are active against a wide range of psychopathological disorders, including the productive, negative, affective, and cognitive domains, while having a favorable tolerance profile, will be the most suitable for solving this problem. The unique therapeutic profile of aripiprazole meets all these requirements. The efficacy and tolerability of Aripiprazole in children and adolescents have been demonstrated in many open-label clinical trials, which served as the basis for the drug's approval by the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and irritability associated with autistic disorder in children and adolescents. Aripiprazole is also included in national clinical guidelines for the treatment of autistic disorders. The high frequency of prescribing aripiprazole in childhood is due not only to its positive effect on negative, cognitive and affective symptoms, but also to its good general tolerance, low probability of developing extrapyramidal symptoms, absence of adverse effects on body weight and metabolic parameters (lipid profile, tissue sensitivity to insulin, etc.).
